TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Animal Planet Pet Video (APPV), producer and distributor of award-winning pet-training videos, today announced the launch of its Shelter Helper program, offering 2 million free DVDs to pet parents in conjunction with Bayer Animal Health, the program's major sponsor. The first-of-its-kind program will provide 500,000 free dog- and cat-training DVDs per quarter to new pet parents of adopted pets through participating shelters.

"We've developed these family friendly, reward-based training videos for adopters and their newest furry family members," stated Kellyann Conway, APPV trainer and President for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. "Providing new pet parents with these fun and educational training videos help them develop a fantastic bond from the moment their new pet arrives home."

The Animal Planet Pet Video DVDs titled "Training Your Adopted Dog" and "Training Your Adopted Cat," are an essential how-to manual for new pet parents, providing tips on how to care for their new pet as well as how to address common issues that often lead to the return of the pet back to the shelter.

Dock diving, a performance sport for dogs, is picking up speed thanks in part to the Outdoor Channel television series “DockDogs." Among the animal handlers featured on the show are John Nicholson Jr. and John Nicholson III of Hazel Dell. Here's a video clip of the father and son training their Labrador retrievers to do high and long jumps in the family pool. .

Three weeks until it begins anew

It's been a while since the Braves had the potential to get 45-50 wins and 600 or more innings from a starting trio, but that's what they expect from John Smoltz, Tim Hudson and Tom Glavine.

If they get that kind of work from them, they believe the bullpen can thrive and the rest of the rotation can fall in line and work without undue pressure, whoever is in those last two starting spots.

I saw that ESPN's Buster Olney in his blog listed a key question or two about every NL team, and for the Braves he asked: Can John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Mike Hampton take the ball for 85-90 starts? Can Rafael Soriano stay healthy?

I agree with Buster on the importance of Soriano staying healthy. Because while the Braves believe Peter Moylan might be able to handle the closing duties in an emergency, or that Mike Gonzalez should be back sometime around the All-Star break, no way do they want to lean on an inexperienced closer or one coming back from Tommy John surgery (Gonzalez) during the heat of a pennant race.

Phil Tippett a special-effects pioneer

Tippett walks into his upstairs conference room with his shirttail out and a wild ring of long gray hair that only adds to the mad professor vibe. Tippett is friendly, but anxious - co-workers say that's his permanent state. He relaxes a bit when he starts a film reel, which is heavy with stop-motion work from two of his biggest influences: "King Kong" special-effects worker Willis O'Brien and "Jason and the Argonauts" mastermind Ray Harryhausen.

"It was this scene right here that I saw at the (Berkeley) Oaks theater, when I was 7 years old in 1958," Tippett says, pointing at the screen as a few actors throw spears at a four-story-tall Harryhausen creation. "This was the thing that inspired me, that scene with the Cyclops in 'The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad.' And I was never the same since."

With no special-effects industry jobs to aspire to, the young Tippett mowed lawns for the money to make his own stop-motion films.

Smith is chosen

2007 began with a tournament in China, the Four Nations Cup which saw England take on Germany, USA and China and come away with two creditable draws.

Smith played her part in all three games, and her performances against Germany and USA saw her named 'Player of the Tournament'. A pleasing credit given the company she was in.

It was at the World Cup that Smith truly shone, and that is her most vivid memory of the year.

"It was one of the highlights of my career to play at the World Cup," Smith admits. "I had dreamed about it for so long and to do it was a thrill.

"It was absolutely amazing to play on the biggest stage and it's definitely the highlight of my career." .
