Holocaust wolf memoir a fake, author admits

The author admitted on Friday that her story was not autobiographical and that she did not trek more than 3,000 kilometres across Europe with a wolf pack in search of her deported Jewish parents.

"I ask forgiveness to all who felt betrayed," Defonseca said in a statement released by her Brussels-based lawyers, Nathalie and Marc Uttendaele.

The 71-year-old author now lives in Dudley, Mass.

Author never fled Belgium in war years

In her book, Defonseca said the Nazis seized her parents when she was a child, forcing her to wander the forests and villages of Europe alone for four years.

She also claimed she was trapped in the Warsaw ghetto, killed a Nazi soldier and was adopted by a group of wolves.

In the statement, she concedes that the story was a fantasy and she never fled her home in Brussels during the war.

Manufacturing lowest in nearly 5 years

The Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) manufacturing index fell to 48.3 from 50.7 in January. Economists were expecting a reading of 48, according to a consensus compiled by Briefing.com.

The tipping point for the index is 50, with a reading above that reflecting growth in the sector. A reading below 50 represents a decline in manufacturing.

The overall reading of the index is the weakest since April 2003, and it also marks the seventh of the past eight months that the index has registered a decline from the previous month.

"This was largely expected, but still not a good sign for the manufacturing sector," said Wachovia economist Adam York.

"It's just one more sign that there's economic weakness in the economy," added York, who believes that this report will give the Federal Reserve further incentive to cut rates at a meeting later this month.

Stricker the forgotten Match Play champ

At this World Golf Championship, Els has never advanced to the third round in America.

Not many were surprised when he said he would not be coming this year. The shock was when he changed his mind.

Els was supposed to be on holiday this week in South Africa with his family. But he figured he had taken a long break in the winter, so he was playing on Dove Mountain as his kids toured the Grand Canyon.

If nothing else, Els' expectations are probably tempered.

“My record is not great in this tournament, as we all know," Els said. “If I have a better game and I get a bit lucky, you win a couple of matches and you can find yourself in the quarterfinals or semifinals. I'm really aiming at that. And basically, that's why I'm here."

Woods is the only No.

Nice to see that Fred has nothing better to do then to continue to make stupid comments! There is more to the job than what your small mind believes. And where do you get off making comments such as these:

"They get frustrated when people call because they are in the middle of a good solitaire hand."

And no Fred, there is enough BS coming from you already regarding this: "What are the 911 dispatchers going to say about this. More BS I am sure."

And btw Fred, if you think you are soooo smart-lets see YOU apply for a 911 dispatcher's position and pass the training. Until then, perhaps you should keep your mouth shut!

"I was trained to fight a war in 12 weeks."

Does not take much training to be told how to stand infront of a bullet.
