Bode Miller: Downhill hellraiser

The world's most controversial skier lies on the bed of his luxury motorhome, a scantily clad girl on each side, and a smile on his face. Waiting for breakfast, his personal chef pours him a hard liquor aperitif. He downs it in one. The tumbler carries the inscription: "I hope you're as hot when I'm sober." Welcome to the world of Bode Miller. Except all is not as it seems.

Bode – it rhymes with roadie – is a 30-year-old American, a 6ft 2in natural athlete with movie-star appeal and a bad-boy reputation. He is involved in one of the closest-run denouements to a season his sport has seen. And, despite the scene with the groupies and the booze, he is more serious about his job than ever.

Over the next month, the 41-race World Cup season (in five disciplines at 20 resorts between October and March) will reach its climax.

Frusciante is the best musician out of all three.

Derek Trucks is amazing. i have seen him live several times and he truly is amazing. For those of you that think he just plays blues, get a clue. He is the most versitile guitarist around right now. Listen to his version of greensleaves - jazz listen to Sahib Teri Bandi - Middle eastern influence….he does to the guitar what Bela Fleck does to the banjo. This guy does not play straight blues…Maybe there is a reason Clapton has been taking him around the world with him in tour.

Is indecency running rampant in our shopping malls?

Imagine that you're out with your teenage children and suddenly see a young woman walking nearby, completely topless except for one strategically-placed hand. Or some guys and girls run by, and one has clearly had his pants and underwear completely off - he's pulling them up, but you can see most of his backside. Or perhaps a half-dozen good-looking women strut by in nothing but underwear and high heels.

Many observers would be irritated or shocked; some might even be angry enough at the young woman to report her for indecent exposure. But while these incidents would violate any local statute for indecency or partial public nudity, most of us would probably shrug them off as a momentary or isolated incidents.

So why do we shrug it off when retailers take those same images, blow them up larger than life, and put them in hundreds of malls and teenage clothing stores around the country? The pictures currently in the windows of Abercrombie & Fitch and Victoria's Secret contain the exact images described above, and would violate public indecency standards in person.

Card mills take 'agents' for a ride

The pitch is seductive and sophisticated.

Qualify for deeply discounted travel. Earn commissions on your own travel expenditures and on that of your friends and family. Build your own travel business with income from others you bring into the fold. Deduct your travel spending from your taxes. Do all of this for less than $500 up front and $50 per month.

Tens of thousands of people are giving it a whirl by buying travel agent credentials. Some do prosper, but many who got their credentials through these "card mills" will be out of the business in less than a year, according to documents from one company filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

BACK IN IRAQ: THE 'WHORES OF WAR'

Senator John Warner, former head of the Senate armed services committee, once called Blackwater the "silent partner in the global war on terror".

Scahill went on to call Prince a "neo-crusader, a Christian supremacist, who has been given hundreds of millions of dollars in federal contracts this is a man who espouses Christian supremacy, and he has been allowed to create a private army to defend Christendom around the world. He refers to Blackwater as the FedEx of the Pentagon. He says if you really want a package to get somewhere, do you go with the postal service or do you go with FedEx? This is how these people view themselves."

Although the company was set up in 1996, it wasn't until 2004 that the world really took notice of it. On March 31 that year, four Blackwater mercs foolishly drove through Fallujah - an insurgent stronghold.

Undernews: Nader - Now The Slander Begins Again

In reality, however, change often comes not from the top or the center but from the edges. Ecologists and biologists appreciate the importance of edges as sources of life and change, whether they be the boundary of a forest, the shore of a bay or the earth's patina so essential to our being that we call the atmosphere. The political edge, at least metaphorically, has many of the same critical attributes.

Third parties have come in all sorts of shapes and colors. Some have aimed at a single issue such as slavery or drinking. Some have been driven by the popularity of an individual such as Teddy Roosevelt or Ross Perot. The ones with the deepest effect on the country's history have tended to be both parties and movements spreading like a virus throughout American culture, such as the Populists, Progressives and Socialists.
