Iraq Casts Shadow on Ohio, Texas Votes

In an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll in December, nearly half of all respondents said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who supports immediate withdrawal of troops, while just over a third said they would be less likely to do so. Only 15 percent said a candidate's war position would make no difference.

Backing for the war divides sharply along partisan lines.

A staggering 92 percent of Democrats in that poll said they opposed the war while 65 percent of Republicans favored it. Another result could bode ill for McCain: 77 percent of independents also said they oppose the war. That swing voting group is critical in the general election.

The change in public sentiment about the war over the last five years is evident in McConnelsville, Ohio.

As the war began in March 2003, this sleepy Appalachian town bid farewell to what was then the largest single deployment of Ohio Army National Guard troops in a single unit, some 433.

Utilities face carbon-use limits

South Carolina's utilities warn many state residents will be left in the dark if some congressional proposals designed to reduce carbon-dioxide pollution from coal-fired plants ever see the light of day.

During an information meeting with the S.C. Public Service Commission on Wednesday, officials representing the state's largest utilities and power cooperatives said nuclear power is the best long-term option for making sure the lights stay on statewide.

The utilities' presentation will help the commission develop a strategy to deal with the impending changes, chairman G. O'Neal Hamilton said.

Commission members did not say publicly whether they support or oppose building more nuclear plants, but stressed they want to make sure residents and industry would be able to continue getting affordable power.

Unbridgeable: The ethnic divide in Kosovo

They were on big fat chairs sitting during all other nations there working for them.

Why should i work for you? Why went Slovens, than Croats, Bosnia, Macedonia, even your twin brother Montenegro went! Why shoud Kosova stay?Because of mines over there? This is only a process of desintegration of a big evil State. You have still a big propaganda programe against all your "enemies".

It will be much better, everyone works for himself. Therefore this had nothing to do with other Countries or minorities. This is only the last part falling from a mosaique called YU. Live in peace!

Marinelli: Lions won't waive Rogers

This is the best year he's had, he practiced all year and didn't miss any games."

Rogers had a career-high seven sacks this season and was a dominant force as the Lions rolled to a 6-2 record at the halfway point. Beginning with the 31-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, though, Rogers' production plummeted. In Detroit's six-game losing streak, Rogers had just 17 tackles (only eight solo tackles), no sacks, no forced fumbles and no fumble recoveries.

While Rogers didn't participate in training camp because of knee problems, he missed almost no practice time and he played in all 16 games for the first time since 2004.

Whether Rogers stays or goes, Marinelli continues to maintain that character and a passion for playing football is at the top of his agenda in formulating a roster.

Microsoft CFO Says Yahoo Would Play Role In Software Strategy

A top Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) executive on Monday said Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) could play an important role in the tech superpower's embrace of the growing trend of selling software as a Web-based service.

Microsoft Chief Financial Officer Chris Liddell cited Yahoo's potential role in response to a question on how the major shift in the way software is sold could affect the tech company's business model - even as he maintained that Microsoft is still weighing its options after the board of Yahoo rejected its acquisition offer.

Microsoft emerged as tech behemoth by selling software mainly as a shrink- wrapped product from which it derived hefty profits from licensing and other fees. However, a growing number of tech companies have shifted to a new business model in which customers, particularly businesses, pay a fee for access to software programs through the Web.

Single women buying homes more frequently

Only 29 per cent of poll respondents cited marriage as a potential reason to sell their home, with trading up to a better home being the most popular answer at 50 per cent.

So just what influence is this influx of women having on the market? An increasing demand for downtown condominium units for one thing, Mr. Soper said. Real estate agents are also having to fine tune their training to accommodate better prepared and more demanding female buyers, he added.

Women are also becoming more likely to tackle 'fixer-uppers,' leading to new marketing efforts by renovation centres including The Home Depot and RONA, and tool companies such as Fixit Chicks and Tomboy Tools, Mr. Soper said.

Business spies for FBI eyes

The FBI Deputizes Business. Editor Matthew Rothschild wrote, InfraGard is a child of the FBI, says Michael Hershman, the chairman of the advisory board of the InfraGard National Members Alliance and CEO of the Fairfax Group, an international consulting firm.

InfraGard started in Cleveland back in 1996, when the private sector there cooperated with the FBI to investigate cyber threats.

'Then the FBI cloned it,' says Phyllis Schneck, chairman of the board of directors of the InfraGard National Members Alliance, and the prime mover behind the growth of InfraGard over the last several years.

InfraGard itself is still an FBI operation, with FBI agents in each state overseeing the local InfraGard chapters. (There are now eighty-six of them.) The alliance is a nonprofit organization of private sector InfraGard members.

O'Malley, legislators brace for revenue report

He said Maryland is in better shape owing to tough decisions made in November's special legislative session, when lawmakers approved more than $1.3 billion in tax increases and about $500 million in cuts.

"The likelihood is — given the national economic downturn — that difficult series of decisions will continue," Mr. O'Malley told reporters Tuesday before meeting with the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee.

Sen. James E. DeGrange Sr., who is a member of the committee, said lawmakers are looking at every state agency for cuts that will be "painful for all of us." Mr. DeGrange, Anne Arundel Democrat, said the current fiscal climate reminded him of the early 1990s, when the General Assembly had to make repeated budget reductions.

Charlize, Salma, Penelope: Domino Effect

There is Hollywood swinging, and then there is Hollywood swinging.

On a day that began in producer Robert Evans' fabled backyard and ended with Cameron Diaz singing along to "Another Brick in the Wall" at Drew Barrymore's birthday party, Thursday night was marked by a ferocious round of something called "Hollywood Domino" in a banquet room at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The players were dressed in formal gowns, since the finalists at three round tables covered in red cloth to accentuate the black dominoes were all glamorous, famous women: Charlize Theron, Kate Hudson, Donna Karan, Salma Hayek, Demi Moore and daughter Rumer Willis.

The one man of boldfaced note who was still playing: Theron's boyfriend, actor Stuart Townsend. Other men dallied through the room including Ashton Kutcher, James Van Der Beek (cheering from the sidelines) and Matthew Perry.
