Inqlings: Reality cuts in on charity dancers
All dressed up and no place to go. Ten local media-ites had been taking dance lessons for a May 17 charity benefit called "Dancing With the Celebrities," in which they'd pair with a dance pro. All the steps were for naught, as the Gershman Y last week pulled the plug. Paradoxically, the fund-raiser's fund-raisers couldn't drum up sponsorships, says Mindie Barnett, who helped set it up for the Y. The event was to help the Y as well as Dancing Classrooms Philly, a nonprofit that brings ballroom training to public schools. "Our cha-cha routine was really coming along," says NBC10 reporter Jamison Uhler, ready to pair with Sandra Dee Guillen, a dance pro. The cancellation came "just when my two left feet had found their rhythm." Also left out were Fox29's Kerri-Lee Halkett and John Bolaris, NBC10's Lori Wilson (who squeezed in only one lesson), CN8's Connie Colla and Greg Coy, WMMR's Kathy Romano and Matt Cord, and Comcast SportsNet's Leslie Gudel and Neil Hartman.
Negro League baseball player finally gets time to shine
Joe Scott's heroes were Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. He once played in an all-star game against Joe DiMaggio, but he never lived the dream of playing in the major leagues as a teammate to baseball's idols. Scott had at least two strikes against him. He was black, and he was short. At 5-7 and 162 pounds, he was playing in an all-star game in Canada once when a recruiter for the New York Yankees scouted him. .
Director: Eminem Almost Leapt Into 'Jumper' Lead Role
As it turns out, the famed white rapper was lined up to play the lead role in the new action film, "Jumper," director Doug Liman revealed to MTVNews.com. "We did have a meeting. We did have conversations with Eminem," the writer/director said about the rapper, whose real name is Marshall Mathers. Eminem became a surprise box office star in 2002 in the autobiographical "8 Mile." Apparently, after being bitten by the acting bug, he spent some time looking for his next project when the "Jumper" script reportedly caught his eye in early 2006. At that same time, Liman (who just a few months earlier had been tapped to direct "Jumper") entered talks about bringing Eminem on board to star as the teleporting David Rice. "[The idea to meet with the rapper] was sort of coming from the producer and [Eminem's] manager," Liman told MTVNews.com.
Political Bulletin
When you look at Democrat versus Republican, we Republicans got out work cut out for us, and get back to the principles that made us the majority party." Some Conservative Leaders Giving McCain A Second Look The New York Times says McCain "has long aroused almost unanimous opposition from the leaders of the right." However, since he "emerged this week as the party's front-runner," his possible victory "is causing anguish to the right. Some, including James C. Dobson and Rush Limbaugh, say it is far too late for forgiveness." Meanwhile, "others, faced with the prospect of either a Democrat sitting in the White House or a Republican elected without them, are beginning to look at Mr. McCain's record in a new light." Those giving McCain a second look including anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist and Christian conservatives Tony Perkins and Richard Land.

Food Prices Straining U.S. Aid
The Bush administration's 2008 USAID budget request calls for $1.2 billion in food aid with a supplemental $350 million to cover assistance in Darfur and critical situations in southern Africa, Kenya and other hot spots. USAID officials said the administration, facing a tight budget year, was not planning to request funds to cover the projected $200 million shortfall from the price increases. USAID purchases grains in the same domestic commodities market as the U.S. companies that serve up Wonder bread or Big Macs, meaning they pay the same high market rates. As a result, officials said, the program cuts are necessary. "At this point, this is the administration's request," Borns said yesterday. Aid groups said they would press USAID and the Bush administration to pursue more funds from Congress to cover the shortfall.
Chicago Irish Film Festival offers an early taste of St. Patrick's Day
Like so many of the best sports-themed movies, "Saviours" has breadth far beyond its subject matter. A boxing movie that's only nominally about boxing, this self-proclaimed "no-budget" documentary follows three aspiring boxers as they train for the 2005 Irish Senior Championships. .
