Of course he likes hyperemotional arena rock from his flaming youth. In 10 years, he'll be ordering up Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On."

Now, Kanye West's version may well be great. Love can always transform schlock, and there are many arguments for it. Then again, there are arguments for everything as evolving sensibilities adjust to new realities and/or get all Oedipal on history's ass—and I'm not buying them. This is an old story in popular music. It happened when pre-Civil War family values infiltrated the first wave of blackface minstrelsy in the late '40s. It happened when ragtime and the foxtrot supplanted the tear-jerker ballad. It went the other way when vocalists took over the big bands. And, although the pop that rock 'n' roll rebelled against was more insipid and also cuter than Journey, as part of the rebel generation, I'm committed to my core values.

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Let's see. Geoff Pope didn't start at cornerback until his senior year at University of Detroit Jesuit High. He clashed with his coach at Eastern Michigan and transferred. He wasn't drafted. He got cut by the Miami Dolphins, the NFL's worst team this season.

Radio & TV Talk

My sources say Citadel, the new owners, are interested in bringing Imus on air at 106.7 and perhaps turn it into a talk station. Another format change could be oldies. I presume they have to keep NASCAR around regardless.

No word yet from Rick Mack, the general sales manager who had to dole out the bad news. I've also tried to reach Weaver, Buck and Rhubarb. I'll post comments from them if I get them. KIcks is now using some weekend jock while Eagle is now being automated with no jocks at all.

"It's horrible but it's the radio business," Mitchell said, matter of factly. He was not under contract and is ready to work anywhere else Monday. In preparation for this, he already has built his own production company.

Citadel, the Kicks/Eagle owner, yesterday reported a nasty loss nationwide and promised swift changes.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

CONSUMER ADVICE PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Since the mid-1990s, there has been a noticeable improvement in Greece's public transportation systems, including the ferry networks serving the islands. Bus and trolley routes are now served by new fleets, while a new mass transit system in Athens - the metro - has helped relieve congestion in the capital's centre.

The 2004 Olympics provided the impetus for improvements in public transport, which include the reintroduction of the tram as a link between the southern coastal suburbs and downtown Athens.

Tram

The tram has three lines: from Neos Kosmos (metro station) to Hellenic Olympic Complex (Agios Kosmas) and from Glyfada to the Peace and Friendship Stadium (alongside the Faliro Sports Complex). The third line runs from Syntagma to Glyfada.

WRXY-TV plants new seed in SW Fla.

Operations manager Stevan Speheger reprograms an automatic Emergency Alert System device on Thursday at WRXY TV in Charlotte County. The station, owned by the Christian Television Network, is breaking ground next week for a studio. The new facility will allow them to create more local programs, many focused on Lee County, for the 24-hour station.

Convention center hotels were a great idea for Denver and Houston, but ...

Louis raised nearly $200 million to build a new headquarters hotel for the city's convention center.

''St. Louis has accomplished something that has eluded most other cities for years,'' tourism director Bob Bedell said after final approval of the plan. The 1,100-room hotel ``will put our hospitality industry into the first tier of convention cities.''

Eight years later, the Gateway City is still waiting for that status upgrade. Meanwhile, the headquarters hotel is flirting with bankruptcy and not expected to cover the debt payments until 2012.

''The picture wasn't as rosy as everybody thought,'' said Gary Andreas, a partner at H&H Consulting, which tracks the St. Louis hotel industry. ``Just about everything that could go wrong, did.''
