IT Best Buy Shines Brightly as CompUSA Fades Away

When it comes to the realm of consumer electronics, Best Buy is the reigning retail leader. Best Buy's market dominance was made even clearer with the company's fiscal 2008 Q3 earnings report.

Best Buy reported a 52% increase in its Q3 profits compared to the same period one year ago. In addition, overall quarterly revenue rose 17% from $8.5 billion USD to $9.9 billion USD thanks to 45 new store openings during the quarter. Revenue from Best Buy's online division helped the total with a 65% increase from fiscal 2007 Q3.

Not surprisingly, Best Buy attributed an extra week of after Thanksgiving revenue for its stellar third quarter performance.

Hot items for Best Buy during Q3 included consoles, flat-panel TVs, notebook computers and GPS units. When all was said and done, Best Buy's sales mix for the third quarter was 41%, 28%, 19%, 6% and 6% respectively for Consumer Electronics, Home Office, Entertainment Software, Appliances and Services.

How the internet went Radiohead gaga

Was it a brilliant business idea, a statement about ethical consumerism, or just a good old-fashioned publicity stunt? Mark Binelli talks to Radiohead, the band who made music history by releasing the first pay-what-you-like album online. Main photograph by Kevin Westenberg .

Unethical practices led to mortgage crisis

I've seen babies and children in Wal-Mart and Nordstrom stores with tattoos on their little arms). However, so far the U.S. courts don't see this practice as child abuse. Amazing, isn't it?Gary MyersOceansideBillions over Baghdad is bankrupting U.S.
The Iraq war and our present economic woes are intricately connected. The law of cause and effect has thrown our country into a recession. Pouring $495 billion into this illegal war has caused our mounting economic woes. Spending $338 million a day on an unending war that should never have been started causes hardships on millions of us in all phases of our economic pursuits. We Americans know that we are supporting this atrocious war on our backs, and the burden has become more than we can bear. This war must be stopped and the spending stopped before our country is bankrupt!Jerry and JudiCunninghamVistaA good way to fight childhood obesity
Regarding "Oceanside school unveils new track": I applaud the efforts of Karen Johnson and the Gibraltar Foundation in bringing attention to the important issue of childhood obesity.

Mail | What readers are saying

I enjoyed Danny O'Neil's article ("Hawks practice-squad players share house, car and common goal," Seattle Times, Dec. 26). I wish they had kept the term "taxi squad." The late Paul Brown named them that because they worked part time for the owner's taxi-cab business.

We always root for the underdogs, so I hope they all make the team one day.

Sonics

There are other reasons for downfall

Steve Kelley's column ("Allen has it all wrong — Sonics made right deal," Seattle Times, Dec. 28) about the Sonics trade of Ray Alen to the Celtics was right. But not for the reasons he cites. One playoff appearance in five years? That has a lot more to do with the previous ownership group shoving Nate McMillan out the door than with Ray Allen's abilities.

B-schools may soon lose monopoly over strategic management lessons

KOLKATA: He is a professor and a gentleman. In a career spanning over two decades with leading companies and top B-schools including IIM Calcutta (IIM-C), he has taught and consulted top corporates on strategic management. But Ranjan Das is now about to change course.

He plans to take the concept of strategic management out of the elitist confines of B-schools into every corner of the country. On a sabbatical from IIM-C since November 2007, he has set up The Strategy Academy (TSA) — a first-of-its-kind initiative.

“All I can say is I have dared to dream. This is an experiment, which is close to my heart and I would like to devote two-to-three years on this. I am ready to put my own money into this venture. I have invested my own funds, including PF money into this," Mr Das told ET.

Las Lomas High School senior finds calling as TV anchor

I discovered my life calling when I was a junior in high school. I was taking a media studies class at Las Lomas High School, and I suddenly felt like everything was right in the world. I had something to work for. My life made sense. I wanted to become a news anchor.

I want to be a news anchor because I want to have the power to inform people about what is going on in the world. It's the one career I feel comfortable about pursuing, and it complements my love of talking, being in front of the camera and journalism.

Originally, I laughed at the idea because being a news anchor seems like an impossible dream or a job a lot of people want to do. But as I began visiting news stations, like KTVU 2, CBS 5, KRON 4 and NBC 11, my dream became more realistic.

When I went to KRON 4 in San Francisco, I saw firsthand what it was like to put together a newscast.

Drobo - storage from Lord of the Rings?

There's no actual mechanical robotics involved at all though. What we have is a mainboard in a small toaster-size black box. This contains an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), firmware, a buffer, four e-SATA ports for four 3.5-inch disk drive slots, and a USB 2.0 port to connect to a PC, Windows or Mac, or server host.

There is no FireWire support and this may well not happen at all if faster USB comes along. Neither is there any Ethernet support. We might speculate that this could happen if Drobo expands its market into the small and medium enterprise (SME) area.

The drive slots can take any capacity 3.5-inch form factor SATA drive. The firmware provides a virtualised pool of storage which offers RAID-like functionality without RAID.

The Lenovo X300 is a true road warrior device

I just recently purchased a super compact Fujitsu U810 UMPC (my review is under development right now) because my personal gadget budget had a cap of US$1000. However, for those of you in the enterprise looking for a serious road warrior device that is high portable and has everything, but the kitchen sink then you may want to check out the newly announced Lenovo X300 notbeook that is the thinnest and lightest ThinkPad ever.

The Lenovo X300 has a starting weight of 2.9 pounds and a 3/4 inch thickness at its thinnest point while having a LED backlit display, 1,8 inch 64GB SSD (standard drive in this model), Intel Core 2 Duo 1.2 GHz processor, up to 4GB RAM, battery life up to 10 hours (using optional additional 3 cell battery), integrated DVD burner (optional), integrated webcam, integrated GPS (option), and more in a carbon and glass fiber body.

Readers will receive an mail notifying them the latest edition of the magazine is out and available. They can then click through to see the magazine. The pages, though looking like magazine pages, will contain embedded video and other rich media.

Gizmo will not be a web site but a real magazine that happens to be available on the web, and it's a distinction Raworth thinks is important to make. “We will act as a filter for all the stuff out there, and the reader gets it in a neat package each fortnight," he says.

Media people believe Gizmo could have legs. “I think it is quite a nice idea. A magazine like that seems to really fit with the format of the e-magazine," says Dan Pimm, head of print media at Universal McCann.

But that said, they don't necessarily see a rush of online magazines in its wake, should it prove itself.
