| Haitian soccer legend Emmanuel Sanon dies
Emmanuel Sanon, one of Haiti's most celebrated soccer players, died at his Orlando home Thursday from pancreatic cancer, family members said. He was 56. Sanon, affectionately known as Manno, was best-known among Haitians and soccer enthusiasts for his goal against Italian Dino Zoff in the 1974 World Cup match in Munich, West Germany. Haiti lost 3-1, but that didn't matter: The striker's goal marked the end of Zoff's record 1,142 minutes without yielding a goal in international tournaments. Today, Haitian soccer fans readily recall their whereabouts that summer day. ''To this day, we really feel -- it may be naive, it may be romantic -- that Manno Sanon won that game,'' recounted radio commentator Herntz Phanord, who watched the match in a crowded movie house in New York.

The GOP's Fake Tough Guys
Today's video: Huckabee sucks up to the teachers' union. ... 11:54 P.M. ___________________________ Monday, December 10, 2007 The GOP's fake immigration tough guys: Mark Krikorian cracks Giuliani's code on immigration. It seems Giuliani wants to stop illegal immigrants at the border but resists "internal" enforcement--e.g., employer sanctions. I'm less gung ho about the need for "attrition" in the immigrant population than Krikorian is--but you do have to have "internal" enforcement to diminish the "jobs magnet," no? Unless, as Krikorian speculates regarding Giuliani, you only want control at the border as a political stunt to appease the 'yahoos' and pave the way for legalization. .... P.S.: Meanwhile, Krikorian realizes that Huckabee--who theoretically based his seemingly tough, "prevent amnesty" proposal on a Krikorian article--has no idea what his own plan is actually about.

Secret Document Man
Smart people would have taken a week to put this animation together. But we did it in one day. With big-time help from the musically talented singer/guitarist Rachel May of the Detroit Free Press, I was able to create an animation within 24 hours of yesterday's Michigan Supreme Court ruling in the continuing legal saga of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Rachel, who blogs and covers the local music and entertainment scene for the Freep, performs with local band Broadzilla and was also a member of the band Grinder, along with Darren McCarty of Detroit Red Wings fame. So kudos and thanks to Rachel! .
Unlimited-call plans spark US price-war fears
He said Sprint may have to come out with a more aggressive offering, which could be bad for the industry. "A more competitive Sprint combined with increasing pressure on voice ARPU does not bode well for medium-term growth of carriers with significant wireless exposure," Hodulik said in a research note. Soleil Securities analyst Todd Rethemeier said that unlimited price plans were inevitable. "I think over the next couple of years the entire industry will be forced to follow suit," he said. Nelson estimated US revenue from mobile calls had fallen to six cents a minute in 2005 from 10 cents a minute in 2003, before flattening at about 5.5 cents a minute in the last two years. Verizon shares closed down $2.49 at $35.34 on the New York Stock Exchange.
3 children left alone
Instead, 29-year-old Kristina Hope Wright stayed out drinking with a male friend, then spent the night at his home, said Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts. After several 911 hang-up calls from Wright's home starting at 7:32 a.m. Saturday, deputies arrived to find the children alone, Metts said. The 9-year-old had fed his 2-year-old sister and 5-year-old brother a breakfast of cold sausage and bread, said Maj. John Allard, Sheriff's Department spokesman. The 2-year-old was "distressed" at having worn the same dirty diaper overnight. But "they weren't hysterical or crying. Under the circumstances, they were pretty composed," Allard said. Deputies were waiting when Wright arrived smelling of alcohol at 8:32 a.m. "She didn't seem surprised there were deputies at her house.
Judge Endorses Separate N.Y. Arbitration on Adjustments to Historic ...
The adjustment the industry is seeking for 2004, the year which is the subject of the litigation, has been pegged at $1.1 billion. Though the funds in question stem from 2004 calculations, the issues raised will most likely recur every year, and the 1998 accord requires that the annual payments extend in perpetuity. Ramos is the first judge in the nation to rule that a state is entitled to its own, separate arbitration on claims that cigarette manufacturers have lost market share because of the obligations imposed by the 1998 settlement. In the second ruling, Ramos rejected the state's contention that he should decide whether it has carried out its obligation under the 1998 pact to collect payments on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations. Instead, he ruled that issue must be decided as a part of the individual New York state arbitration.
